Football season is here! This means two full days of games to enjoy each weekend if you’re a devoted fan.

Research indicates that 31% of American males spend up to 6-10 hours a week watching football. (Women’s habits are harder to measure – but I know I spend a decent amount of time cheering on my team come Fall).

And even if you’re no fantasy-football guru or sports enthusiast chances are you’ll tune in for a few Buckeye or Browns games at some point.

This time of year typically includes rich game-day foods like wings, chips, and calorie-laden dips. Snacking just seems to happen when your nerves are getting the best of you cheering on your team.  Oh, and then there’s the beer…

Plus all this TV time undoubtedly means more time sitting. In the summer months we tend to spend our weekends outside, being active – and those habits can unfortunately taper off as the weather cools, and watching football on the couch becomes the norm.

So, how do you avoid becoming a football season couch potato?  Make sure your workouts, and nutrition stay a priority!

Here’s a few tips to help stay on track:

  • Fit in a morning workout. Getting a good sweat in before game-day activities sets a healthy tone for the day.
  • Sit far away from the bowl of snacks, and finger foods. If eating with a fork is an option – do that. People who snack using a utensil tend to consume less.
  • If you’re heading to a restaurant or sports bar eat something healthy beforehand so you aren’t tempted by greasy bar food. (Lean protein, and whole grain carbs are a good choice).
  • Drink plenty of water! If you’re imbibing make sure to drink a glass of water for every beer or cocktail you consume. You don’t want to be feeling so rough in the morning that you don’t get your morning workout in.
  • Amp up the cardio, and strength training! With more couch-time on the horizon you’ll want to focus on quality, effective workouts. Cardio is key for fat-loss, and strength training helps keep your metabolism humming.
