Joe Butler, the founder of Prescription Fitness, is a native Clevelander who spent eight years in Los Angeles as a fitness trainer working with everyone from professional athletes to homemakers.
Joe is a graduate of St. Edward High School where he wrestled and won a freestyle state championship for the Eagles. In his senior year Joe was honored by being named as St. Edward Best Conditioned Athlete. He then went on to wrestle for Eastern Michigan University where he was captain of his team, won a freestyle national championship and was asked to join the coaching staff at the completion of his NCAA career in 1991. “That was a great opportunity for me. Not only did I get to design detailed strength and conditioning programs for Division I athletes, I was also able to work very closely with one of my mentors Olympic Champion Steve Frazier.” After helping lead EMU to its best finish in school history, Joe graduated with his Bachelors degree the following spring.
Joe turned his sights to the sport of natural bodybuilding and won both his class and the overall title in the 1994 Natural Body Building Championships. He moved to California in 1996 to pursue his passion and was runner up in his class at the drug free World Championships in 1998.
While in L.A , he was in a unique position to learn from some of the top fitness trainers in the world. Steve Zim, NBC Weekend Today Show Fitness Host and Author of Hot Point Fitness, hired Joe and taught him the secrets of getting results from not only top level pro athletes but also the Hollywood stars.
Joe has a wide range of experience working with grade school and high school athletes of all levels. He is currently the head coach of the CYO wrestling program that combines the parishes of St. Brendans/ St.Clarence/ St. Richards in grades K through 8. Joe has led his wrestling team to 3 City Championships in the past 4 years and has compiled a dual meet record of 51-2 over that time span. Joe worked at summer sports camps at the University of Iowa and the University of Michigan. He has also helped coach little league baseball and football for 8 seasons and is currently working closely with many athletes to help them reach their full potential. His twenty plus years of hands on experience and extensive knowledge of how our bodies work make him one of the leading trainers in the area. Joe is certified as a personal trainer and Pre-Post natal specialist through the AFPA and ACE and CPR certified through the American Red Cross, he also has a Youth Coaching certification through the CYO. Joe and his wife Kelly have 5 children and currently live in Avon.
