Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, I think you will agree with me when I say that dieting and working out somehow become our last priority. The fact that you are not on your regular schedule, you don’t have access to your regular gym, and you are not putting together healthy meals in your kitchen can make it difficult to stay on track and motivated.  After a long day of meetings or vacation activities, the last thing you want to do is search for a gym in hopes of getting a workout in.

For those of you who want to be stronger than your excuses and also realize that excuses do not burn calories, I have put together a short list of things you can do prior to leaving for your trip to ensure that you can get a workout in. So, while you are on vacation or on a business trip, leave your excuses for not exercising at home!

  1. Before you book your hotel, call or check the hotel’s website to see what kind of fitness facilities are provided. If the hotel does not have a gym, perhaps you can find a gym near your hotel by visiting this website: www.fitforbusiness.com.
  2. If you can’t find a hotel with a gym or with a gym nearby, try to book a hotel near a park or recreational area. You can take a jog or walk and even perform some body weight exercises. All you need is a picnic table, a bench, the ability to be creative, and a positive attitude! You can even do the circuit below:
  • Marching in place warm-up
  • Jumping jacks
  • Push ups
  • Alternating lunges
  • Dips using bench
  • Squats
  • Situps/crunches
  1. If for some reason (weather, time constraints, etc.) the options above do not work, take a workout video with you. Most hotel rooms have DVD players.  Take your favorite fitness video with you and get moving!

I will leave you with one final thought: a 30 minute workout is just 2% of your day!
