It is no secret that having a consistent fitness routine in place will provide countless physical and mental health benefits.  However, cementing this habit into one’s lifestyle is much easier said than done.  When Nike says “just do it”, it all seems so simple, yet this phrase alone won’t do it for the majority of people.  We all have different starting blocks and a unique deck of cards dealt to us, but everybody has it in them to improve.  I try to think of working out as being in the same category as brushing my teeth in the morning.  It is a healthy habit that has no business being ignored.  Getting to this place does take time, and it all starts with finding your call to take action.

Motivation can be fleeting, but it provides a headspace to make immediate changes that can propel you forward.  When you see a video or a quote that gets you thinking about adopting healthy habits, it is best to lean into those feelings right away.  Building momentum off periods of motivation will help ensure staying on the path.  Something as small as purchasing a new pair of shoes or outfit can be enough to get the ball rolling.  For others, seeking a gym membership or personal trainer can help to keep accountability.  I’ve had many clients tell me that me and my clipboard are 90% of what gets them in the car and on the way to the gym.  Leaning into external factors that will help keep you on track is key.  When these parameters are in place, it is much more difficult to slide back into a sedentary lifestyle.

Once you have started to find yourself in a routine for a few weeks, the motivation that got you there will likely be dwindling.  This is when you must remind yourself that this new area of your day to day is a marathon and not a sprint.  You do not have to have the best work-out of your life every single day to keep progressing.  Consistency to a mild routine will get you farther than sporadic work-outs every other week. The mindset I try to find here is the knowledge that once I am ten minutes into the physical work, it will not be as daunting as it seemed sitting in the parking lot beforehand.  Endorphins will be released in your brain letting you experience what is often referred to as the “runner’s high”.  Yes, this headspace can be achieved from other forms of physical activity! I guarantee you will find something to feel good about during the workout whether it be accomplishing a new record or just simply knowing that you took time to better yourself.  Stacking days like this, one after the next, will begin making your routine something permanent in your life.  Motivation will come back around again and again, but now you can use it as a tool to boost what you already have going on in your everyday life, and take your fitness game to new levels of improvement
