At Prescription Fitness, we firmly believe in the power of fostering fitness habits early on,
especially for our youth. The importance of ensuring a child’s physical health is pivotal, not just
for the present but for their future well-being.

  • Starting Age for Strength Training: Despite reputable sources like the Cleveland Clinic
suggesting that strength training can begin as early as four to six years old, it’s the
mental focus that’s often the challenge. This is why, at Prescription Fitness, our typical
starting point is around the fifth grade, although there are exceptions for mature fourth
    graders.
  • Athlete vs. Non-Athlete Training: The training frequency and intensity largely depends
on whether the youth is an athlete or not. For athletes, especially during their sports
season, a regimen of about twice a week for an hour seems optimal. However, the
nature of the training is equally important. If they are already engaging in heavy
cardiovascular workouts post their practice sessions, our emphasis leans more towards
    strength training.
  • Purpose of Training: While it’s essential to push boundaries and break personal records,
during the athletic season, our focus shifts more to maintaining the off-season gains.
Furthermore, injury prevention is paramount. Through specific motions termed
‘prehab’, we aim to prevent injuries before they happen, ensuring our young athletes
remain in top form and injury-free.

In the competitive world of youth sports, the best approach is holistic – one that champions
both performance and safety.

If you’re a budding young athlete or the parent of one, and you’re keen on maximizing potential
while ensuring safety, don’t hesitate. Reach out to Prescription Fitness for a personalized plan
designed just for you
