PREVENTING SPORTS-RELATED INJURIESIVL logologo FW

Did You Know?

  • More than 46.5 million children participate in sports each year in the United States.
  • One in three children who plays a team sport is injured seriously enough to miss practice or games.
  • Girls are up to eight times more likely to have an ACL injury than boys
  • Most organized sports-related injuries (62 percent) occur during practice rather than in games.

The most common types of sports-related injuries among children are sprains, muscle strains, bone or growth plate injuries, repetitive motion injuries and heat-related illness.

For young athletes, sports activities are more than play. Participation in athletics improves physical fitness, coordination, and self-discipline, and gives children valuable opportunities to learn teamwork.

Because young athletes are still growing, they are at a greater risk for injury than adults. The consequences of overdoing a sport can include injuries that impair growth, and may lead to long-term health problems.

Fortunately, many youth sports injuries can be prevented. Some of the more effective ways to prevent these injuries include age-specific coaching, appropriate physical conditioning, and proper use of equipment.

This is why Prescription Fitness is teaming up with IVL Baseball in Wadsworth and Ferrell-Whited Physical Therapy Services to offer a comprehensive injury prevention program geared towards athletes of all ages.  The programs are designed to offer sport specific training, along with a health risk screening, goal setting, nutrition counseling and body composition analysis. Parents don’t feel left out! These programs are available for you as well!
